How SMEs can reduce their bank interest cost by the application of financial technology?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>First, bank approval and pricing are based on risk-reward. The lower the risk, the better the price. Interbank prices differently due to different information received or risk appetite. Large multinational or listed companies, due to regulatory requirements, generally have regular and relatively transparent information releases, including annual or quarterly results, major business or financial status, and will regularly communicate with investors, investment banks and rating agencies. Research reports and credit ratings are available for reference. Banks can obtain information of those large corporates in many ways and the risk level will be close among banks thus the price will be relatively consistent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, for SMEs, banks rely on bank managers to communicate with\ncustomers and collect information. Major banks have their own or outsourced\nsystems to assist in the analysis of risk levels and pricing, as well as more subjective\nrisk assessment by different bankers. As a result, the approval conditions vary\nfrom bank to bank and prices vary widely. In the past ten years of banking\nexperience, author has often found that there will be a 1-2% difference in\ninterest rate. For every millions of loan, the difference in interest costs for\none year is already 10 to 20 thousand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Traditionally, SMEs find bank managers through personal networks or\nintermediaries. However, there are many banks, and each manager&#8217;s expertise and\nrisk preferences are not the same. This traditional method is not necessarily\nefficient. Nowadays, thanks to the advancement of information technology, many\nindustries have been de-intermediated. With the power of algorithms, big data\nanalytics and user behavior analysis, online platform can accurately match\nsupply and demand side in different industries. For example, there are car hailing\nplatforms that connect commuters and drivers while there are also different\nplatforms in traveling to match travelers with airlines or hotels. In the\nbanking sector, price comparison platform is also very efficient in achieving\nmarket competitive prices for retail products like deposits, credit cards and\nmortgage loans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In corporate banking, due to the complexity of products and the challenges\nin assessing corporate risks, the development of related technologies has\nstarted slower than retail banking in Hong Kong. However, with the market development\nand many successful cases overseas, fintechs in Hong Kong have also begun to\nenter the door of corporate banking. For example, there is a first-to-market\nfree online platform to use artificial intelligence and big data algorithms to\nassist SMEs in matching bank managers for commercial banking services from opening\nbank accounts, commercial credit and trade finance. The platform offers\none-stop solution to shortlist suitable banks and managers and compares the\nbest price under the same conditions, according to the corporate&#8217;s business\noperations, basic financial information and loan requirements. Since the reply\nis performed by real bank managers according to the situation of the each\ncorporate and not purely comparing the official price of bank products, the\nsuccessful rate of the matching can be ensured.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With the introduction of the Hong Kong Monetary Authority&#8217;s open API\nframework last year, corporates in future may connect to major banking systems\nthrough fintech platforms to instantly compare, apply and obtain approval of\nbanking services for better user experience.
